Charleston SC this weekend.

I'm on the road today headed down to my favotie Southern stopping ground: Charleston, SC. I'll be doing some street style stuff while in town. It's going to be nice so it will probably look more like spring than winter.

Don't forget about the meet and greet tonight at Chai's Loundge, the bar in downtown Charleston on King. I'll be there from 7pm til 8pm. I'll also be making my way over to Rogue Wave Surf Shop around 9pm for some live music, so If your out on the town, stop by either one of those places and say hi.

Midtown... 34th Street, New York

I ran into Stacy here while waiting in line for the bus back to DC (yes, I take the bus, why not?). Aside from her obvious personal style, what caught my eye was the green tote over her shoulder. She had it custom made from her father's duffel bag that he had when in the military. I've been thinking about doing this very thing with my own duffel bag from my Air Force days, and even more so with my own father's duffel bag he got in the 60's when he joined the Air Force. Check out Stanley and Sons based out of Brooklyn where she had hers done.

Meet & Greet - Chai's Lounge - Next Friday in Charleston SC

I'll be at Chai's Lounge downtown Charleston, SC on King Street for a Meet & Greet this upcoming Friday January 27, at 7:00pm at the Bar for about an hour. Nothing formal, just find me at the bar and say hello, we can chat about fashion, or anything else you have on your mind. I'm really looking forward to this opportunity to get to meet and thank a few of my readers in the Charleston area where I don't normally spend much time doing anything other than surfing, eating, and walking the street for photos.

Although I won't have my camera on hand Friday night, I'll have an idea of where I'll be out walking the streets Saturday, so I might line up a few photos.

I'll see everyone Friday! and don't forget to comment, tweet, or e-mail me if your planning to come.

So I got a message from my friend over at Rogue Wave Surf Shop in Charleston that he's having some live music. So after I have dinner, I'll be heading over to Rogue Wave on 69 Spring Street for some live entertainment. If you can't make the Meet and Greet at Chai's, swing by RW+SS after about 9pm. Hope you see you at one if not both on Friday!

Downtown... "Dr. Martins," Roanoke

I've always wanted a pair of Dr. Martin books, something about them is classic yet bass-ass at the same time. Ignore the stereotypes that are often associated with black Doc's, I will forever think these boots are sweet and never out of style. To add to it, I feel the only way they should be worn is with your pants rolled up as high as needed to show as much of the boot as possible. The gentlemen above got it right for sure. Its the Air Force Vet in me with a sweet love for all those years blousing my uniform pants high and ever so crisply to show off my freshly shined combat boots each day.

Unfortunately my giant feet do make me feel as if I'm wearing moon boots vs. streamline British kicks, but from what I've seen, Dr. Martin has revaped their classic boot a with slightly more low profile fit. I may just have to give them another shot to satify the inner teenager in me who missed out getting a pair of the gum soled icons.

Recap... New York

This past weekend in New York was great, although It wasn't my first visit to the Big Apple, it was the first trip with the mindset of a street style photographer. The only major hurdle I was worried to over come was, how to stop people for a photo when everyone seems to be a such a rush. We'll, I sort of gave up trying to wait for someone just standing in the perfect spot for me to ask and just went on shooting like I always do.

Although my approach to street style worked like normal, there is still a learning curve to every new town I visit. Understanding the different social interaction, and how they react to what I do is key. Although New York is the street style capital of the US, I had to observe for a bit before I went to work. Each of the three major parts of town I visited had its own mood, its own unique backdrop, and over all style.

SoHo and its surroundings - SoHo is a strange mix of  a small town vibe in downtown New York. Its beautiful cobblestone streets, uniform lofts and storefronts, kind of gave me a Charleston vibe. The foot traffic is pretty consistent also, well tailored modern J Crew looks, thrift savvy fashionistas, and hipsters galore. There were two speeds in Soho - strolling along, and lets get there. If you see someone you want to take a photo of, don't take your eye off them, they will be gone in a second. The other truth to SoHo is street style is kind of a normal thing, I actually spotted out two other style photogs doing their thing while around town.

Midtown - Although there are several very specific areas around Mid-Town, I'm going to generalize here. Midtown is where I stayed, and where most visitors venture to since you have Time Square, Rockefeller Plaza, and so on. Even though Midtown is shadowed by some of the most iconic skyscrapers in New York, and populated by every tourist on the planet, Midtown was a beautiful thing to see on the fashion front. With its massively wide sidewalks, and hordes of sightseers, one would think true fashionable New Yorkers would avoid this area. Although there is probably some true to that, every now and then something magical wouldng would happen. Some stunning creature with legs for miles would break through the crowd with towering heals working the sidewalk like the runway show at Valentino. It was as they had the power of Moses and parted those crowed like the Red Sea, then continued down the street on a open stage showing off their newest threads. Hipsters had no power in midtown, they just got lost in the mix, the show stoppers were high fashion goddesses.

Upper West Side - I had only one reason initially for visiting the Upper West Side; stroll through Central Park, detour through the American Museum of Natural History, then get my hotdog fix at Grays Papaya. Oh was I in for a surprised because Upper West Side is gorgeous, no fashion needed. The row townhouses with lovely tree covered stoops; its not like something from a movie, it probably was in a movie. I didn't spend as much time in the Upper West Side, but with some standout residents and sleepy side walks, magic will happen next time I'm there for sure.

New York was fun! And if I learned anything new this time around, almost everyone in New York is fashionable. Even in such a fashion mecca, I still only lined up a few stand shots because mentally, what is good and what stands out fashionably speaking is raised to a higher standard. It makes it that much harder, but oh so fun. I can't wait to get back up there.

Whats this? Is there another Street Style photographer in Roanoke now? haha! No. This is actually my friend Rabiah, a photographer based out of Roanoke I stumbled onto while out on a walk. She was on the job shooting a look-book for a local vintage shop.

Headed to NYC this week.

Happy New Years everyone!

Last week I decided to plan a short winter vacation to New York City this week. Although I'm not really going up there for Street Style stuff, it would be silly of me not to come home without a few photos. On that note, I will have my camera in hand pretty much at all times ready to stop some stylist New yorkers.

See you Thursday New York!
